The higher and slightly cooler Mojave Desert is the special habitat of Yucca brevifolia, the Joshua tree for which the park is named.
The dominant geologic features of this landscape are hills of bare rock, usually broken up into loose boulders.

The Palm Springs area is unique, as the wind blows hard enough to power the windmills 300 days a year.
There is 3,100 windmills at the wind farm, which generates enough electricity (600-900 megawatts of power) to power the entire city of Palm Springs and some of the surrounding area.
